HOLLAND COUNCIL ON AGING
Minutes of meeting held On July 2, 2008

Meeting opened at 10:15 a.m.

PRESENT: COA members:  Harold Hewinson, Lowell Nixon, Olive Nixon, Bruce Plumley, Susan Sanders. Others: Senior Center Director: Margaret Crock, Brad Noble, Kitchen Manager: Don Sanders, Outreach Worker: Deb Tierney.

ABSENT: Maintenance Manager Paul Gillis, and Jack Reed.

Minutes of June 4, 2008 accepted.

REPORTS:
 
OUTREACH WORKER: Deb Tierney (written report)
No speakers in June.  The Friends of the Holland Seniors donated the makings for ice cream sundaes.   Judy Belezos will join us in July with a presentation on Urbana Health Sciences products, and Candy Caputo will conduct a blood pressure clinic and speak about diabetes and its effects.   Lois Dupre, our Senior Companion, was recognized at a dinner in Chicopee on June 25th.   There is some extra help for people with serious fuel cost issues.  Some VOC members came to visit our Senior Center.   Lois will be on vacation July 16-23 and August 11-15.  Looking for people to fill in for her those weeks.   We have two Senior Aides starting on July 7th as Activities Assistants.   There are summer concerts in Brimfield and Sturbridge and a roast beef dinner at the Holland Rod and Gun Club on July 26th.

SENIOR CENTER DIRECTOR: Margaret Crock.
In May, 1,218 contacts made, 120 seniors served, 542 attended the Senior Center, 153 attended congregate meals, and the balance includes cards & games (85), exercise (39), senior tax work off program (7), No-sew blankets (4), movies (8), Intergenerational activity (189), flag retirement (18), phone calls (66), newsletter (4), soldiers cards (10), AVADA (3), computers (24), other meals (67).  Donations include: Flowers from the Nixons, crafts and yarn from Scouts and Linda Dennis, considerable medical equipment/supplies from Michael Kennedy, canned drinks etc. from Barbara Lyons and Sue Sanders.

FINANCIAL: Brad Noble, Treasurer  
Receipts in June were: GSSSI $583.33. Expenditures in June were: telephone $60.04, M. Crock salary $666.00, Deb Tierney wages $794.30, electric $146.76, trash pickup $28.73, managers wages $1,000., gas $222.74, lawn supplies $558.25, lawn care $84.00, postage $772.80, exercise classes $45.00, printing $89.60, and mileage (Deb and Lois) $233.32.

SENIOR TAX ABATEMENT PROGRAM: Margaret Crock and Harold Hewinson.
Year to date, $2,572.50 has been charged to the Senior Center, $2,244.50 to the School, $698.00 to the Tax office, $500.00 to the Assessors office, $484.00 to the Town Clerk, and $112.00 to the Selectmen’s Office.



PROGRAM COMMITTEE: Margaret Crock, Deb Tierney & Olive Nixon
Ongoing activities include regular luncheons, mahjong, cards, scrabble, cribbage, crafts, exercise, blood pressure clinics, soldiers’ projects, and movies.  Also, we have a garden and there is a need for weeding.   An Open House will be held on July 14th from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. to meet and welcome Jack and Linda.   The   American Red Cross would like to conduct a blood drive from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. on July 25th.  If approved, helpers to aid the workers would be appreciated.   On July 30th at 10:30 a.m. Judy Belezos will give a presentation on Urbana Health Products for health and nutrition, followed by BPC.

BUILDING MAINTENANCE:  Paul Gillis (written report)
Request is made for approval by the COA for a two-part weed program.  Request to pay Ken Bastikis for about two hours work to use the cemetery weed whip to cut the weeds in the landscaped areas.   Approval requested to buy 1 ½ gallon portable sprayer and chemicals to control regrowth, a sum not to exceed $100.00.  Motion made and approved.   Paul also requests an inspection and review of our storage areas in order to free up space, and to carefully consider the impact of acceptance of future material donations.

KITCHEN MAINTENANCE: Don Sanders
A noise emanating from the refrigerator was fixed.  The pancake breakfast went well.
                
All of the above reports were accepted by the Council on Aging.

OLD BUSINESS - None.

NEW BUSINESS
Motion unanimously approved to hold an American Red Cross Blood Drive on July 25th from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.   Brad has resigned as a representative of the COA to the GSSSI.  He will continue as member-at-large.  Susan Sanders is considering being the representative.  The Town of Holland must approve the appointment before GSSSI can grant approval.  Motion to appoint Susan Sanders to the Advisory Board of GSSSI was unanimously approved.   Harold Hewinson stated that he felt someone local should be Chairman of the COA.  Motion made, seconded and unanimously approved to correct the appointment of officers for FY 2009, reflecting Bruce Plumley as the Chairman and Harold Hewinson as Vice Chairman.
